Previously on Beth's Journal*...
*I've been watching Grey's Anatomy all dayWhen last we left off, I was having a bad week at work, but I'd bought a house.Over the weekend, I spent four and a half hours with a home inspector having him show me every single thing that's wrong with my new house. Ugh, talk about depressing! The major thing is that the house needs a new roof. I thought this would cost about $8K. I spend the rest of the weekend talking about this, making everyone around me wish I had multiple conversation topics.Sunday, I talk to my dad. He says the majority of the stuff on the list, he can fix. So now my parents are coming to visit the first week of March, and I am going to learn how to caulk. It's all very exciting. My friend Hazel gave me a roofing contractor recommendation and the estimate? $3,400!!!! Color me relieved :D So I am trying to get the seller to pay part of it, but I ain't holding my breath. The rest of my days are filled with exciting things like appraisals and home insurance quotes, so I won't bore you with that. The hardest thing is keeping myself from buying things for the house, but I am NOT JINXING my closing.

Yay! (About the very reasonable roof estimate...just make sure you know how many layers are on already, because "they" say that there shouldn't be too many or it gets too heavy.) Did I tell you this already, or did I just think it? Not sure...anyway, it is depressing when they tell you every teeny little thing, but that's what they're supposed to do, at least there shouldn't be too many surprises, you know? And you've just reminded me that I *should* be doing some marathon viewing of GA too...I've only watched the first few from this season! Does Izzy just tear your heart out, or is it just me?xoxoxox
Over here, I am sure that the seller has to pay for the roof, one of our only decent rules!!
Izzy rocks! She's most of the reason I'm hooked on the show. And yes, they are removing the old layers and replacing the felt underneath. And they're going to check the decking underneath - any thing that needs replacing will be above the estimate, so hopefully it won't have rotting.
That is a good rule! My seller is trying to say that she will "repair" the roof, or rather have her uncle come over and repair it. NO FRIGGIN WAY. We're trying to get her to give her an estimate of what she's willing to have him do, then get her to pay that amount instead of having the work done. It needs a new roof, it's getting a new roof.
DEFINITELY have them front the money and get someone reputable to actually do the work--I made the mistake of accepting a "repair" which was supposed to be the completion of the vent from my dryer to the outside--the way the house was built it was blowing all the lint from the dryer into the attic where the furnace is--NOT GOOD. They said the work was done, but a year after moving in I found it had not been done and had to pay $200 to have it done myself plus another $200 for new AC parts when the lint mucked up my AC unit. gah.
Good news about the roof repair cost! I think when you buy a house you have to learn how to do stuff whether you want to or not - to save money and time. Either that or you have to be-friend someone who knows how to do stuff. Good luck with the closing!
Yikes! Now I'm wondering where mine empties out... so much to think about!
Thanks! And I want to learn how to do the stuff around the house, because this is my house and my responsibility, and I need to be able to take care of it when there's no one else around. Not that I won't gratefully and graciously accept help, but at the end of the day, I need to be able to keep up my house.

That's very good, also make sure that the roof they put up is whatever grade necessary for the weather in your area, windy, rainy, etc.I'm pretty sure I have a girl crush on Izzy - but really 'cause not only is Ms. H beautiful, she is such a natural actor! It's a great show, too - so well written.xoxox
p.s. I'm laughing at my icon up top. I'm just a floating head! (open car door in front of me)
Hey I missed the news! Congratulations! Don't worry there will be on and off freaking out but it all works out. Sounds like you're lucking out already!\o/
*uses new icon*Yeah, I tend to freak out when I start looking at my bank accounts, but it will all work out :D Thanks!
